The PADMA SRI AWARD is one of the highest awards a citizen can get.
The Padma Shri is a PRESTIGIOUS CIVILIAN AWARD of India, recognizing
DISTINGUISHED service in various fields. It is the FOURTH-HIGHEST
civilian award, after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma
Bhushan. The award recognizes exceptional achievements in diverse areas
like art, education, science, medicine, social work, and public affairs.
Here's a more detailed look at its significance
:
1. Recognition
of Excellence: The Padma Shri is a symbol of national honor,
acknowledging OUTSTANDING contributions to society. It highlights the
achievements of individuals who have made a NOTABLE IMPACT in their
respective fields.
2. Diverse Fields of Recognition: The award encompasses a wide range of
disciplines, including arts, LITERATURE , EDUCATION , SCIENCE ,
medicine, social service, sports, and public affairs. This broad scope
allows for the recognition of talent and dedication across various
sectors.
3. Symbol of NATIONAL PRIDE : The Padma Shri is presented by the
President of India on Republic Day, making it a significant national
event. This formal recognition elevates the awardees and their
achievements to a national level.

INSPIRATION and MOTIVATION for individuals to excel in their respective
fields. It encourages dedication, hard work, and a COMMITMENT to PUBLIC
SERVICE .
5. A Reflection of National Character: The award's focus on service and
CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY reflects the values of the nation. It recognizes
the importance of individual efforts in ADVANCING THE WELL-BEING OF THE
COUNTRY.
Requirements to Be Accepted for the Padma
Awards
From the
Government Website it is explained what is the Selection Criteria:
The usual practice
is to invite recommendations every year from 15th March to 31st July from all
State / UT Governments, Ministries/Departments of the Government of India,
Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan awardees and Institutes of Excellence.
Recommendations received from them and also from other sources like
Central/State Ministers, Chief Ministers/Governors of State, Members of
Parliament, as also private individuals, bodies etc., are placed before the
Padma Awards Committee.
The Padma Awards
Committee is constituted by the Prime Minister every year. It is headed by the
Cabinet Secretary and includes Home Secretary, Secretary to the President and
four to six eminent persons as members.
While no rigid
criteria or trenchant formula for selection is applied by the Padma Awards
Committee, it looks for life time achievement of an individual while making a
selection. There ought to be an element of public service in the achievements of
the person to be selected. The award is given for ‘special services’ and not
merely for long service. It should not be merely excellence in a particular
field, but the criteria has to be “excellence plus”.
Persons selected
for the awards are subjected to verification by the investigating agencies of
the Government with a view to ensuring that their character and antecedents are
above board.
The Padma Awards
are conferred on the recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which
are submitted to the Prime Minister and the President for approval.
The Awards are
announced on the eve of the Republic Day every year.
Coverage of the Award Before the Ceremony
Before the ceremony on April 28, the list of
awardees were announced the day before Republic Day on the 25th of January. From
then on, there were many newspapers, internet journals and other venues that had
write-ups and articles on the winners and the significance of the award. This
gave me a chance, when I spoke to the interviewers, to glorify Srila Prabhupada
for giving me the inspiration to share Vedic spirituality and knowledge with
others, and to show the mercy of Lord Krishna. What follows are a few of these.

glory of Indian and Vedic culture for over four decades.”
“I feel that it is a
reflection on Srila Prabhupada and the work he has done since, without him, I
would not be where I am today. And the effect he has had on India is still
growing tremendously. So, I’m very grateful to him and to all who have helped me

American champion of Vedic Culture gets India’s Padma Shri award
Stephen Knapp, head of the ISKCON temple in Detroit, has been honored with Padma
Shri, India’s 4th highest civilian award, for decades of researching Vedic
culture and authoring many books.
Stephen Knapp, a prolific author and prominent proponent of Vedic culture, has
been awarded Padma Shri in the category of Literature and Education.
Stephen Knapp feels grateful for receiving the prestigious Padma Shri award in
the category of Literature and Education from the Indian government. “The award
to me is for a life of dedication to working to Protect, Preserve, Promote, and
Perpetuate the Vedic culture of India,” the prolific American author and ISKCON leader
tells Lotus.
Knapp, who goes by the spiritual name Sri Nandanandana Dasa, is a Krishna
devotee who heads the ISKCON (International Societyfor
Krishna Consciousness) temple
in Detroit, Michigan.
He has authored numerous books, including ‘The Secret Teachings of the Vedas’,
‘Proof of Vedic Culture’s Global Existence’, and ‘Mysteries of the Ancient Vedic
Empire’.
The Padma
Shri award
from the land of the Vedas underscores Knapp’s remarkable contributions as a
writer, author, philosopher, spiritual practitioner, traveler, photographer, and
lecturer.
He was surprised when the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, informed him about
the award on the eve of India’s Republic Day, January 26, when the Padma awards
were announced.
He hopes to go to India in a few weeks to receive the award from the President
of India, Droupadi Murmu. He says, “This is likely the highest award I will
receive in this lifetime, so I consider it very special. I thank everyone who
has helped me along the way, beginning with my spiritual master, His Divine
Grace Srila
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (ISKCON
founder).”
Through his
writings and advocacy, Stephen Knapp, who lives in Detroit, Michigan, plays a
significant role in preserving and promoting Vedic knowledge and making it
accessible to a global audience.
Stating that the study and practice of Vedic culture have been the most
beneficial for him, he professes that “it can be most beneficial for everyone
else if they simply look at it with an open mind and deeply enough to see how
profound it is.”
Last year, Kanpp received two prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards. The
first, conferred by the Hindu
Mandir Empowerment Council (HMEC),
recognized his role in presenting the deeper aspects of Vedic thought to global
audiences and his work managing temples and inspiring devotees. The second
award, from the Vishwa
Hindu Parishad of America, acknowledged
his scholarly contributions to preserving and promoting the universal relevance
of Vedic knowledge.
With over 40 years of research, sadhana practice, and travel experience, Knapp
has widely been accepted as a respected voice in Indology and Vedic studies.
Born in the United States, Knapp’s journey into Vedic culture began with a deep
interest in Eastern philosophy and spirituality. His quest for knowledge led him
to explore various spiritual traditions, ultimately finding his path in the
Vedic teachings.
Unlike many academic Indologists, Knapp immersed himself fully in the spiritual
practices described in the Vedic texts. He believes understanding this ancient
wisdom requires direct engagement with its prescribed disciplines. Knapp’s
spiritual journey took a significant turn when he encountered the Bhagavad-gita,
which he describes as the “last piece of the puzzle” in his research.
Under the direct guidance of Swami Prabhupada, Knapp continued his study of
Vedic knowledge and spiritual practice. During this period, he received his
spiritual name, Sri Nandanandana dasa, and was initiated into the Brahma-Madhava-Gaudiya
sampradaya, an authorized spiritual lineage within the Vedic tradition.
The Radha Krishna deities, Sri Sri Radha Kunjabihari, are enshrined at the
ISKCON’s Devasadan Mandir in Detroit, MI. Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandana dasa)
is the temple’s Chairman.
One of Knapp’s significant contributions to the field is his work on tracing the
global influence of Vedic culture. In his book “Proof of Vedic Culture’s Global
Existence,” he explores the dissemination of Vedic ideas and practices
worldwide, drawing connections between ancient Indian civilization and other
cultures. He has been involved in various projects and initiatives aimed at
raising awareness about the threats facing Vedic culture and proposing solutions
to address these challenges.
Stephen Knapp’s journey from seeking Eastern wisdom to being a respected author
and practitioner of Vedic culture exemplifies the transformative power of these
ancient teachings. Through his writings and advocacy, Knapp plays a significant
role in preserving and promoting Vedic knowledge, making it accessible to a
global audience while emphasizing the importance of direct spiritual experience
in understanding this profound philosophical tradition.

Krishna, to countering theological distortions and challenging anti-Hindu
prejudices, political distortions, and misrepresentations. My discussions with

Some of the Coverage of the Award After the
Ceremony in Delhi
After the ceremony, many more
congratulations came in through social media and emails, and a number of
additional postings and write-ups or articles also appeared, along with some of
the interviews I gave in the Press Room of the Ashok Hotel appearing on various
outlets. Some of these include the following:
Here is one announcement on Iskcon News,
which is especially nice because up until recently, I had hardly received any
notice from the institution itself about my preaching or activities of sharing
Vedic culture or Krishna consciousness, even though I had been a member of
Iskcon for over 50 years, yet many individual devotees were well aware of the
work I had been doing and very appreciative of it. .

Nandanandana expressed, “I am very grateful for this level of recognition
from the Indian government,” he said, “I have been working at trying to
please Srila Prabhupada by working to spread Krishna Consciousness and the
glory of Indian and Vedic culture for over four decades.”
Speaking of the awards earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said,
“Congratulations to all the Padma awardees! India is proud to honour and
celebrate their extraordinary achievements. Their dedication and
perseverance are truly motivating. Each awardee is synonymous with hard
work, passion, and innovation, which has positively impacted countless
lives. They teach us the value of striving for excellence and serving
society selflessly.”

This is a very touching short video slide show put together by Iskcon
Vrindavana of me being a seeker, then becoming a devotee, then engaged in
sharing the Vedic spiritual knowledge through my writings, up to winning the
Padma Shri award. I was most surprised and honored that they would take the
time to put together such a video on myself and what I’ve been doing all
these years. It is on Instagram but had also been circulating extensively on
Facebook, which you can see here:

What is next is the coverage from the HINDU POST on my background of being a
spiritual seeker up to winning the Padma Shri award from the Indian
government. The original posting on their website also included a few videos
of interviews with me as I had given in the Press Room of the Ashok Hotel,
which you can see through this link:

Padma Shri Stephen Knapp: Illuminating the World with the Light of
Vedic Wisdom
Shri Stephen Knapp, an American author, researcher, and speaker,
was honored with
the Padma Shri on 28 April 2025 for his outstanding contributions to
literature, specifically for his lifelong dedication to
the preservation, propagation, and global understanding of Vedic
culture and Bharatiya spiritual traditions. His journey stands as a
testament to the power of cross-cultural engagement and spiritual
scholarship.
Early Life and Spiritual Quest
Stephen Knapp was born and raised in
a Christian family in the United States, where he developed a strong
foundation in Christian theology by seriously studying the Bible
during his youth. However, as a teenager, he found himself
unsatisfied with the answers provided by his faith, prompting a
deep exploration of
other religions, philosophies, occult sciences, ancient mythology,
mysticism, and yoga. His quest was driven by a desire to find deeper
spiritual truths and answers to fundamental questions about life,
identity, and the universe.
Turning Point: Encounter with the Bhagavad-gita
The pivotal moment in Knapp’s spiritual journey came in 1971 when he
first read the Bhagavad-gita.
He describes this experience as finding “the last piece of the
puzzle” that brought coherence to all his previous studies. The
depth and comprehensiveness of Vedic philosophy convinced him of its
unique spiritual value, leading him to become a full-fledged
follower and practitioner of Sanatana-dharma (the eternal path).
Adoption of Vedic Tradition and Spiritual Name
Under the guidance of
His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder
of ISKCON, Knapp was initiated into the Brahma-Madhava-Gaudiya
sampradaya, a respected spiritual lineage within the Vedic
tradition. He received the
spiritual name Sri Nandanandana Dasa and became deeply involved in
the practice and dissemination of Krishna consciousness.
Immersion in Bharatiya Culture and Spiritual Practices
Knapp’s dedication to Vedic culture extended beyond academic study.
He traveled extensively across Bharat, visiting major and minor
pilgrimage sites, temples, and holy places, gaining firsthand
spiritual experiences that enriched his understanding and
teachings. He also became known for his cultural photojournalism,
capturing the essence of Bharatiya spiritual life through
photography.
Literary Contributions: Books and Articles
Knapp is the author of 55 books and hundreds of articles on
Bharatiya spirituality, Vedic traditions, and philosophy. His works are
widely regarded for making complex Bharatiya scriptures and
philosophical concepts accessible to global audiences. Notable
titles include: The Secret Teachings of the Vedas; Proof of Vedic
Culture's Global Existence; The Heart of Hinduism; Advancements of
Ancient India's Vedic Culture; Crimes Against India; and many more.
Through these works, Knapp has provided deep insights into Bharatiya
culture and history, offering spiritual roadmaps for seekers
worldwide. His writings often explore the global influence of Vedic
civilization, the scientific and linguistic legacy of ancient
Bharat, and the relevance of Dharmic traditions in the modern world.
Promoting Understanding and Dispelling Misconceptions
A central theme of Knapp’s work is bridging the gap between East and
West. He has tirelessly advocated for a nuanced understanding of
Bharatiya spirituality, striving to dispel misconceptions about
Hinduism and Vedic culture. His lectures and writings emphasize the
universal appeal of Vedic traditions and their potential to uplift
humanity, regardless of cultural or religious background.
Knapp has also worked to make ancient scriptures such as the Bhagavad
Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam,
and the Upanishads more
accessible to international audiences, providing commentary and
context that resonate with both newcomers and seasoned
practitioners.
Professional and Community Roles
Temple Leadership: Knapp serves as the head of the
ISKCON temple in Detroit, Michigan, where he leads spiritual
activities and community outreach.
Organizational Leadership: He is the founder and past
president of the Vedic Friends Association and The World Relief
Network, both dedicated to promoting Vedic values and interfaith
understanding.
Author and Lecturer: Since 1986, Knapp has published
over 50 books and more than 200 articles, and has delivered
lectures at universities, corporations, and conferences across
the US, Canada, Mexico, and Bharat.
Recognition and Impact
Stephen Knapp’s efforts have earned him recognition as a global
ambassador for Bharatiya culture. In addition to the Padma Shri, he
has received lifetime achievement awards from organizations such as
the Hindu Mandir Empowerment Council (HMEC) and the Vishva Hindu
Parishad of America, honoring his decades-long service to the Hindu
community.
His influence extends beyond
literature; through lectures, seminars, and community service, Knapp
has inspired countless individuals to explore the spiritual depth of
Bharat and to appreciate the enduring relevance of Vedic wisdom in
contemporary society.
Statements and Reflections
On
Receiving the Padma Shri
“The award to me is for a life
of dedication to working to Protect, Preserve, Promote, and
Perpetuate the Vedic culture of India… This is likely the highest
award I will receive in this lifetime, so I consider it very
special. I thank everyone who has helped me along the way, beginning
with my spiritual master, His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta
Swami Prabhupada.”
On the
Profundity of Vedic Culture
Knapp emphasizes that Vedic philosophy offers unparalleled spiritual
knowledge:
“I have studied all of the world
religions and no other texts or scripture offers such a depth of
spiritual information. That is why I have concluded that the Vedic
philosophy is the last bastion of deep spiritual truth and
knowledge. Nothing offers what it does. Vedic culture, essentially,
takes up where the Western religions leave off.”
On
Teaching the Next Generation
He recognizes the importance of making Vedic knowledge relevant for
youth:
“If they do not get the right
answers to their questions, or the proper guidance to understand the
purpose and meaning of its philosophy and practices, it will not
make enough sense to them to seriously take up the path or fully
accept it. Therefore, I realize how important it is to teach them
correctly, and in a way in which they will find interest in it.”
On His
Personal Transformation
Knapp reflects on the impact of Vedic culture in his own life:
“The study and practice of Vedic
culture have been the most beneficial for me, and it can be most
beneficial for everyone else if they simply look at it with an open
mind and deeply enough to see how profound it is.”
Recognition and Legacy
In addition to the Padma Shri, Knapp has received Lifetime
Achievement Awards from the Hindu Mandir Empowerment Council and the
Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America for his scholarly and community
contributions. His work is widely respected for making the profound
wisdom of Bharat’s spiritual heritage accessible to people
worldwide, and he continues to inspire seekers through his writings,
lectures, and personal example.
Stephen Knapp’s life is a remarkable journey from Western religious
roots to becoming a global advocate for Vedic culture, marked by
deep scholarship, spiritual practice, and a commitment to sharing
Bharat’s ancient wisdom with the world.
CONCLUSION
All in all, the
whole experience was one of the most unforgettable highlights of my
life. Staying at the Ashok Hotel, meeting so many nice people, many
of whom already were aware of the work I do, meeting the President
of India and Narendra Modi, and the ceremony in such a grand setting
as the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the tours we had the next day of the
War Memorial, The Prime Ministers Museum, and then the Rashtrapati
Bhavan were all exceptional, and I was humbled, honored, but very
happy to be a part of it. In many ways, it is like being a part of
India's history through this means. And a recognition by Mother
India and its administration of all the work I've been doing for so
many years.
Jai Srila Prabhupada. Jai Sri Krishna.
Dharma Rakshati Rakshita, and Jai Hind.
